Haines authorities are urging caution after a brown bear mauled a woman on FAA Road early Saturday morning.

The bear attacked the woman around 6 a.m. when she was out walking her dog. After the attack, she walked home and called 911, Haines Borough Manager Alekka Fullerton said in an email.
The Haines Volunteer Fire Department received the report about the attack just before 6:30 a.m., and transported the victim to the local SEARHC Clinic. Fire Chief Zak Overmyer said in a phone call this morning that the victim sustained “serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”

Fullerton said an Alaska State Wildlife Trooper and the Haines Borough Police Department are searching for the bear. Police Chief Jimmy Yoakum directed KHNS to Fullerton when asked for comment.
A Nixle alert went out around 8:45 a.m. that warned of an “an aggressive bear, possibly accompanied by a cub, near Mt. Riley Road.” Authorities later urged the public to use “extreme caution,” including on the Battery Point trail and Mt. Riley trail. The Lily Lake trailhead, near the dump, is closed until further notice.
