While the city waits for warmer weather, there are several events to keep you busy. The Anchorage Weekender rounded up 10 things to do in Anchorage, from rap concerts to a reading rendezvous.

1. Taste of Spenard

Thursday and Sunday, various times, Spenard Windmill (2435 Spenard Rd.)
Several local food trucks set up outside of Chilkoot Charlies each Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., they’ll return alongside live music, vendors and a beer garden.

2. Car Seat Safety

Thursday, 2 to 4 p.m., Anchorage Fire Department (1150 Airport Heights Dr.)
If car seats aren’t installed correctly, your child’s safety could be at risk. Certified child passenger safety technicians will conduct free car seat and booster seat checks. Organizers say to bring your kids, car seats and vehicle, but ask to leave pets at home. One-on-one demonstrations will also be available.

3. Bike to Work Day

Friday, various locations
Biking is an active and fun way to improve air quality in the city. Ride solo or with a group of friends to work or wherever you choose. Treat stations will be open from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Swing by the free Bikes and Brews afterparty at the Alaska Airlines Center from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. to enjoy beverages and live entertainment. Local bike vendors will show off their new summer gear available for purchase. There will be a free bike valet.

If your kid needs a bike helmet, the Anchorage Fire Department is giving them away for free.

4. Reading Rendezvous

Saturday, noon to 4 p.m., Loussac Library
This event celebrates reading and kicks off the library’s Summer Discovery reading program, which allows youth 17 and under to receive a book when they finish their reading log. Adults can also participate for a finishing prize.

5. Member Appreciation Day

Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Alaska Public Media (3877 University Dr.)
Members of Alaska Public Media are invited to enjoy activities for all ages, a chance to go behind the scenes and to meet some local reporters. This family-friendly event includes a bounce house, lawn games and a visit from Molly of Denali. This event is an opportunity to learn more about local news, content creation and community work. 6. Hmong Veterans Memorial Day

Saturday, 10 a.m., Anchorage Veterans Memorial in Delaney Park
Friday is Hmong-American Veterans Day. Honor Hmong veterans who fought during the Vietnam War. This event includes a competitive volleyball tournament, traditional dance performances and food vendors.

7. Cold War Secrets

Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kincaid Park (9401 Raspberry Rd.)
These days, Kincaid is known for its trails, but the park was home to servicemembers during the Cold War when it was a Nike missile site. On this nearly three-mile walking tour, you’ll enter two historic structures and view the remnants of many more. This event is open to those 10 and older, and organizers ask that you leave your pets at home. Space is limited and registration is $30.

8. Firefighters open house

Saturday, noon to 3 p.m., 1140 Airport Heights Dr.
This is packed full of activities, from a bounce house and face painting to fire drills and truck tours. There will also be hot dogs and refreshments. Free parking is available behind Alaska Regional Hospital.

9. Shoreline Mafia

Sunday, 6 p.m., Williwaw Social
You’ll hit a Milly Rock and money dance listening to this California-based hip-hop group that draws inspiration from 50 Cent, Three 6 Mafia, Max B and Gucci Mane. The show features Brother Buffalo, Duckman and OC the Savage.

Children ages 12 and younger get in free, but, like any attendees under 21, they must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are $92. This is an outdoor event.

10. Farmers markets

Various times and locations 

  • 225 E. St.
    This open-air market downtown showcases local artisans, produce, food trucks and more. The Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market runs Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September. 
  • 2555 Spenard Rd.
    Shop more than 20 local vendors and vibe to local music under the iconic Spenard windmill from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each Saturday through mid-September. The event is dog-friendly. 
  • 11111 Old Seward Hwy.
    This weekly Saturday market in the O’Malley Sports Center parking lot runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features everything from flowers and plants to microgreens and salsa. 
  • 1420 Cordova St.
    Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., shop local Alaska foods, from vegetables to baked goods. Some vendors accept WIC and QUEST, along with senior farmers market coupons.
