Just after 7:00 on Saturday morning, about two dozen people were packing camping gear into three brightly painted dugout canoes in downtown Haines.<\/p>\n

They were rushing to begin a 90-mile journey to Juneau for Celebration, a cultural gathering for Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people that draws thousands every other year. The trip had already been delayed by a day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe earlier we can go, the better. I don\u2019t know how long it\u2019s going to stay nice, and we got 28 miles to go against the tide,\u201d said Wayne Price Kaajis.yoodzi.\u00e1xk.<\/p>\n

Price is a Tlingit master carver who grew up in Haines. He\u2019s widely known for his work duplicating historic totem poles, designing and carving new ones, building seaworthy dugout canoes \u2013 and mentoring others to do the same.<\/p>\n

Price would captain one of the three canoes, which he carved more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get tired, you\u2019re going to find a deeper place to pull from,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to pull from there and keep pulling.\u201d<\/p>\n

After everyone loaded up their gear, they rolled the canoes down to the water on dollies. Price\u2019s crew climbed in, adjusted the boat\u2019s position and started paddling toward a nearby beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go to Juneau!\u201d Price shouted out as they navigated through Haines\u2019 small boat harbor.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s crew comes from all over. Of course, from Haines \u2013 or Deishu, the area\u2019s Tlingit name \u2014 but also from the Carcross area, across the Canadian border, from Kodiak and even Arizona, said G\u0331ooch o\u0301x\u0331oo or Kevin Jones, of Juneau.<\/p>\n

Jones is Choctaw and has worked with Price for the last decade. He will captain another of the canoes. He said he appreciates the inclusive nature of the Celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cCelebration, of course, is a Tlingit, Tshimian and Haida thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I\u2019m adopted, but that\u2019s an honor and a privilege. It doesn\u2019t make me Tlingit,\u201d he added. \u201cBut they\u2019ve been so gracious in just opening up and letting me be a part of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones said two of the three boats making the journey are traditional dugout canoes. The one he captained was made a little differently; he said it was \u201creverse engineered.\u201d The bow and stern were carved from cedar, while the rest was made from long strips of spruce.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe trees for these have to be like 500 years old, so few and far between,\u201d he said, \u201cWe want to save the ones that are still out there for our future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three canoes made their way to the beach in front of town and were greeted by a sacred fire \u2013 and a group that\u2019s there to bless the fleet. Price got out of the boat and said this will be his seventh journey to Juneau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done this a few times,\u201d he said. \u201cBut quite a few of us are on their first journey, and we want to hold them up to keep them strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

The goal that first day was to make it nearly 30 miles, working against the tide.<\/p>\n
