Anchorage Fire Department officials say a wildfire in South Anchorage is contained after responders fought the blaze Tuesday for around three hours.<\/p>\n

The fire started near 100th Avenue and C Street at around noon and grew to just over five acres, Anchorage Fire Department Wildfire Division Chief Jon Glover said. It burned through dead grass, spruce and mixed hardwoods, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cause is currently under investigation,” Glover said. \u201cBut it appears to be a human-caused fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several fire engines were staged nearby Tuesday afternoon, both from the Anchorage Fire Department and the state Division of Forestry.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny time we have potential for a fast-moving fire that\u2019s close to structures, we\u2019re gonna send a pretty heavy response to that,\u201d Glover said.<\/p>\n

Crews were able to build a perimeter around the fire and get it contained at around 2:45 p.m., Glover said.<\/p>\n

Skies were cloudy in Anchorage on Tuesday, but spring is a time of year when there\u2019s a lot of fuel for fires in Anchorage, Glover said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt had an ignition. It burned through all of that grass, spread to about five acres pretty quickly,\u201d Glover said. \u201cAnd when it\u2019s got anything like 5- to 10-mile-an-hour winds on it like we have today, it\u2019s going to move fast and have some potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that residents should be wary while recreating and monitor any warming or cooking fires.<\/p>\n
