A brown bear attacked and injured a runner Thursday in Anchorage on the Wolverine Bowl trail, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The woman was running alone when she encountered the bear, Fish and Game said in a statement Friday.
The encounter happened near the Prospect Heights trailhead. The woman was able to deploy bear spray and self-rescued to the trailhead before being transported to a local hospital for treatment, the statement said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the woman’s injuries were considered life-threatening.

Fish and Game said biologists looked for the bear, unsuccessfully, and collected samples. Warning signs have been posted at the trailhead.
