Temperatures are starting to fall but the number of events isn’t.
The Anchorage Weekender has seven things to do this weekend, from First Friday art and toe-tapping jazz to a neighborhood-wide garage sale and one last trip to the Alaska State Fair.

1. Anchorage Press Party
Thursday, 6 to 10 p.m., Akela Space (320 W. 6th Ave.)
The Anchorage Press is back and it’s time to party! Celebrate the first print issue of the alternative newspaper since the revival with live music, food and drinks, a silent auction and good vibes. Limited edition merch will also be for sale. Organizers ask attendees to RSVP in advance.
2. First Friday
- Akela Space (320 W. 6th Ave.): Bryce Nicolasa Foks wears many hats – she’s a graphic designer, printmaker, bassist and poet. Experience an art show from Nicolasa Foks and Friends from 5 to 9 p.m.
- The Nave (3502 Spenard Rd.): Artist Adrienne Stohr will be showing off STAGES, a collection of artwork at various creative stages from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Anchorage Museum (625 C St.): This month’s event is all about food and friendly conversation. Tables will be scattered around the lawn to mingle at, hosted by various community members and artists. Anchorage artist Duke Russell will also host a community dinner party where folks can lend a hand. Admission is free from 6 to 9 p.m.
- Wildbirch Hotel (239 W. 4th Ave.): “Returning Home,” a collection of nearly 30 pieces by artist Cheryl Lyon, will be on display this month. Lyon primarily works in encaustic, layering paint and other materials on top of each other. There will be free, light refreshments from 6 to 7 p.m., but the showing runs until 8 p.m.
The full First Friday map includes more than two dozen stops.
3. Lionel Hampton tribute concert
Friday, 7 to 9 p.m., Anchorage Lutheran Church (1420 N St.)
You don’t need to head south to hear this year’s Sitka Jazz Week Faculty Quartet. They’ll be in the big city on Friday, playing swing and big band tunes that are sure to make you want to move your feet. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students, military members and seniors.
4. Neighborhood garage sale
Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Bayshore neighborhood (Amber Bay Loop)
Why go to one yard sale when you can hit multiple? Bayshore is holding a neighborhood-wide garage sale on Saturday. There will be several houses participating, along with food trucks.
5. Burning Moose
Sunday, 6 p.m., Miller’s Landing (13880 Beach Dr.)
You’ve probably heard of Burning Man, but what about Seward’s Burning Moose?This is an all-ages outdoor music festival featuring a bonfire, a beer garden and more. The lineup includes Blackwater Railroad, Super Tall, Dig Sista, K-Bwayno and more. Tickets are $20.

6. The Alaska State Fair
Daily through Monday, Alaska State Fairgrounds (2075 Glenn Hwy.)
There are a couple discount days at the Alaska State Fair this weekend. General admission is around $20, but on Sunday, all military personnel get in for $5. Organizers say each service member can bring up to three others at the discounted price. Monday is the final day of the fair and admission is $5 for all first responders.
7. New boardwalks at Potter Marsh
Daily, Potter Marsh (2999 154th Rd.)
There are two new boardwalks on the southeast end of Potter Marsh, according to recent reporting from the Anchorage Daily News. Potter Marsh is one of the city’s birding hotspots, so if you’re looking for a new lifer, consider checking out the new 200-foot walkway.
